Getting married in Marrakech: the guide to a wedding like no other

Marrakech, a wedding destination three hours from Paris
The short answer Getting married in Marrakech means a wedding over three days rather than a single evening: welcome dinner, ceremony and party, then a brunch the morning after. The best seasons are spring and autumn. You choose between a riad for intimacy, a palace for the full show, a villa in the Palmeraie to keep everything in one place, or the Agafay desert for a night under the stars. On the legal side, most foreign couples marry legally at home, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Marrakech.

A wedding in Paris is a beautiful evening. A wedding in Marrakech is a whole weekend your guests will still be talking about ten years later. Three hours on a plane, almost no time difference, and suddenly everyone is on holiday together: your friends, your families, you.

The trick is making sure it stays a holiday for you too. Here is how we do it, from the season to the morning-after brunch.

Why Marrakech?

Remember to check the dates of Ramadan, which move forward by about ten days each year: some services and venues run differently during this period.

Where to marry: riad, palace, Palmeraie or desert?

The private riad: intimate

A house built around a courtyard, rooms for your nearest and dearest, a party that starts at sunset on the rooftop. Perfect for up to around a hundred guests, and for couples who want their wedding to feel like a big party with friends.

The palace: the full show

Carved salons, vast gardens, ornamental pools: for weddings of 150 to 300 guests, or for anyone who wants a film-set backdrop.

The villa in the Palmeraie: everything in one place

Accommodation, ceremony in the garden, dinner by the pool, after-party until the early hours: everyone stays on site, nobody hunts for a taxi.

The Agafay desert: a night under the stars

Less than an hour from Marrakech: a lunar landscape, tents, rugs, a huge sky. Ideal for the welcome dinner or the Saturday party. We love it, but we always prepare a plan B for the wind and the night-time cold.

The format that works: three days, not one evening

  1. Friday, the welcome dinner: everyone arrives, gets to know each other, relaxed mood. The desert or a rooftop in the medina is perfect for it.
  2. Saturday, the big day: symbolic ceremony in the late afternoon, drinks at sunset, dinner, then the party. Gnawa musicians at the entrance, a DJ afterwards: the mix works every time.
  3. Sunday, the brunch: by the pool, sunglasses compulsory. It is often the guests' favourite moment.

The legal side, without the headache

For most foreign couples, the simplest route is to marry legally at home, in a small ceremony, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Marrakech with an officiant, your own words and your own rituals. A civil marriage in Morocco is possible in some cases, but the process depends on your nationality and your religion: check with your town hall and your consulate before setting your plans.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get legally married in Marrakech?

Most foreign couples marry legally at home, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Marrakech. A civil marriage in Morocco is possible in some cases, but the process is long and depends on the nationality and religion of the couple: check with your town hall and your consulate before committing.

What is the best season to get married in Marrakech?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) bring warm days and mild evenings. Summer is very hot during the day, and winter can be chilly at night, especially in the desert. Also check the dates of Ramadan, which change every year.

How far in advance should you plan a wedding in Marrakech?

Ideally 3 to 6 months, enough time to book the venue, hold the accommodation and let your guests plan their trip. But with a team already based on the ground, a wedding can come together much faster: the best venues simply go earlier in spring and autumn.

Where should guests stay for a wedding in Marrakech?

The simplest option is to book out a riad or an estate that sleeps some of your guests, then top up with nearby hotels. In the Palmeraie, some villas let you bring accommodation and reception together in one place.

Getting married in Marrakech means giving the people you love a real trip, not just an evening. The one condition: a team on the ground who knows the venues, the suppliers and the surprises, so you only have one thing to do. Say yes.
